say cheese controls limited moves — Read the HUD, spend actions on purpose.

Say Cheese Companion · Reviewed · Independent sources

THE SHORT ANSWER

Public materials stress limited actions as the twist on maze pushing. Learn to read move and attack indicators, restart cleanly, and treat every push as a budget decision.

Why limited moves change the genre feel

Classic Sokoban already punishes irreversible pushes. Say Cheese adds an explicit action ceiling on top of that spatial puzzle. Steam’s about text warns that you have a limited number of actions, which turns near-optimal paths into a first-class requirement rather than a speedrun optional goal.

That design is why community players talk about counting routes before moving. A path that looks correct geometrically can still fail if it spends too many actions on setup pushes.

Treat the limit as information, not as hostility. The HUD telling you how many actions remain is the game teaching the cost of curiosity. Early deaths while learning are expected enough that Steam and console lists both include death-count achievements.

How to read the action HUD

Demo footage narrates distinct indicators for remaining moves and attack-style actions beside other status icons. Exact icon art can vary by platform skin, but the practical habit is the same: glance at the counters before every push and every risky tile.

If an attack counter exists in your build, do not spend it on scenery. Save offensive actions for enemies such as slimes that achievement lists explicitly ask you to slash. Walking into a fight without budget is a common softlock into a restart.

When counters are low and the cheese is still distant, stop moving. Re-evaluate whether a fake wall, alternate corridor, or different barrel parking spot is the intended efficiency gain.

Because every step and push draws from a limited action budget, treat each maze as a planning problem first and a movement problem second. Look at the cheese, the blocked corridors, and anything that would force a detour. Count the cheapest path in your head before you commit the mouse.

When a route fails, restart promptly rather than forcing a near-miss path that cannot recover. Community players repeatedly note that retries are part of the intended loop, especially while learning how barrels, fake walls, and enemies interact with the move counter.

Keep a simple notebook or mental checklist for recurring traps: thorns that punish careless travel, locks that gate the shortest corridor, and slimes that consume attack actions. Matching the right tool to the obstacle saves more runs than rushing the cheese tile.

Community duration claims are useful only as order-of-magnitude hints. A hunter who already knows Sokoban patterns will finish faster than a player learning push logic for the first time.

Controls reported by players

The Steam Stage 1 walkthrough documents a U/D/L/R notation for solutions and states that R retries in-game. YouTube demo commentary describes WASD movement with R to restart on PC. Console players should use their platform’s standard d-pad or stick mapping as shown in that build’s prompt UI.

Because this site does not claim first-hand play, treat any single video’s keybind as a player report. If your settings menu offers remapping, prefer whatever keeps restart on a comfortable key—you will use it often while optimizing routes.

Movement snappiness is part of why some Steam reviewers enjoyed the game despite not usually liking Sokoban. Fast restarts plus short levels create a try-again loop closer to a bite-sized puzzle app than a long adventure RPG.

Action budgeting heuristics

Heuristic one: never push a barrel until you know where it must rest. A barrel parked one tile too far can erase adjacency you need later.

Heuristic two: prefer routes that avoid thorn damage unless you are intentionally farming the thorn-related achievements. Damage events are useful for trophies but costly for clean clears.

Heuristic three: if two routes look similar, pick the one with fewer irreversible pushes even if it walks slightly farther—provided the walk still fits the counter. Walking is usually easier to reverse via restart than untangling a jammed crate room.

Heuristic four: when you are one move short, inspect for secret passages before assuming the level is unfair. Steam’s fake-wall achievement exists because the designers hide at least one shortcut.

Practice drills that respect the sources

Drill A: clear an early level, then immediately retry it aiming to finish with more actions remaining. You are training estimation, not chasing a leaderboard the stores do not publish.

Drill B: intentionally burn moves on Stage 1 if you want death achievements, as trophy roadmaps suggest, then return to optimized clears. Separating trophy farming from route learning reduces confusion.

Drill C: watch a short demo segment muted while pausing on each decision point. Predict the next action, then resume. This uses public footage as a planning coach without copying an entire solution blind.

Where this guide quotes a Steam Stage 1 walkthrough string, treat it as a player-reported solution for that specific layout, not as an official patch note. Layouts and console trophy lists can differ by platform packaging even when the core fantasy stays the same.

Questions players ask

What are the basic PC controls in player demos?

Demo commentary commonly uses WASD or arrow-style movement with R to restart. Confirm bindings in your own build’s options if they differ.

Do pushes cost moves?

Player demonstrations show barrel pushes consuming from the same limited action budget as walking.

Is there an undo button?

A Steam review wish-list mentioned wanting undo; do not assume an undo feature exists unless your build’s UI shows one.
